A Zoo in Africa
Why would there be a Zoo in Africa?
Isn’t Africa a place where animals roam free and people take safaris to see them?
For visitors from afar that might be true, but for local people and native school children, a ride in a land rover and a tented campsite amidst roaring lions is a dream far beyond their reach. For most Ugandans, and especially for Uganda schoolchildren, wildlife is something exotic and distant. Even though they are living only fifty or one hundred miles from some of the worlds most famous game parks, very few of them will get to visit. Most Ugandans just cannot afford the entrance fees, lodging, and transport costs that would allow them to view the wildlife that is protected within their country. For these people the zoo is the place where they can see and learn about their native animal species.
